Attribute #6 – GOD is Eternal!
Psalm 90:1-2 LORD, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were born or You gave birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
1828 Webster’s Dictionary Definition of Eternal: Without end of existence or duration; everlasting; endless; immortal.
Eternal, everlasting, forever, unto perpetuity, world without end – all of those words mean just what they say. When God talks about Himself, that’s what He means – the High and Lofty One who exists eternally, forever, unto perpetuity, world without end. – The Attributes of God (Volume 2) by A.W. Tozer (Pg. 59)
God didn’t begin to be – God was. God didn’t start out from somewhere – God just is. And it’s good that we get that in our minds. Time, you see, is a creature word, because it has to do with things that are. It has to do with the angels, with the lake of fire, with the cherubims and all the creatures that are around the throne of God. They began to be; there was a time when there were no angels. Then God said, “Let there be,” and the angels began to be. But there was never a time when God was not! No one said, “Let God be”! Otherwise, the one who said “Let God be” would have to be God. And the one about whom He said “Let him be” wouldn’t be worth our trouble. – The Attributes of God (Volume 2) by A.W. Tozer (Pg. 62)
God is eternal; He’s from everlasting to everlasting! This is an excellent attribute to not just meditate on, but it’s one of Great Truth we can emphasize when we share the Good News of Christ with unsaved people. God, the uncreated One has always existed and will exist forever more. Years ago, I would always cross paths with this young lady near my job. One day, I had the opportunity to share my faith with her. As we talked, she explained to me that she was a Muslim. She said that she believed in Jesus, but she saw Him as a prophet/a good teacher who lived at some point in history. She further stated that Jesus is not the Son of God, because God does not have any children. I gently informed her that’s not true. Jesus is the Son of God and the Bible clearly declares He is. I gave her a Gospel of John booklet and encouraged her to read it which talks about the life of Jesus and His ministry. I assured her that I would keep her and her family in my prayers for God to open her eyes to the truth of who He is and His Son, Jesus Christ as well as for their salvation. Before we parted ways, I gave her John 14:6 which says (paraphrasing), Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Him.
I share this story to encourage you in your walk with the Lord. It’s important to know who God is, His Word, and why you believe what you believe. You may not be a person who does street evangelism, but there will be times when God gives you divine appointments to share the Good News of Christ with those you may cross paths with or even within your sphere of influence. Also, there may be times when people ask you, “how can you be so sure of your faith in Christ” or why do you believe what you believe?” It’s important that we share our faith lovingly and effectively and give people the whole truth and not water down the gospel for fear of someone getting their feelings hurt. There will be people who will mock and reject you for speaking the truth of God’s Word while others will receive the free gift of salvation. Don’t be discouraged! God’s Word never returns void! Keep sharing and leave the results to God! Your obedience is important and the Lord Himself will reward you.
2 Corinthians 2:15-16a For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; to the one an aroma from death to death, to the other an aroma from life to life.
John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
You need God, for God is your eternity. You need God, for God is your tomorrow. You need Jesus Christ for Jesus Christ is your tomorrow. He’s your guarantee of that which will be. He’s your resurrection and your life. And when the sun has burnt itself out and the stars have been folded up like a garment, God will still be, for God dwells in an everlasting now that nothing can get to. And He takes His children who believe in His Son into His bosom, into the heart of the everlasting now. – The Attributes of God (Volume 2) by A.W. Tozer (Pgs. 73 – 74)
