Attribute #1 – GOD is Self-Existent!
Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were born or You gave birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
1828 Webster’s Dictionary Definition of Self-Existent: Existing by its own nature or essence, independent of any other cause. God is the only self-existent being.
But before Mary was, God was! And before Abraham was, God was. And before Adam was, God was! And before the world was – the stars, the mountains, the seas, the rivers, the plains or the forests – God was! And God is and God will ever be. God is the originating Self. (The Attributes of GOD, Volume 2 by A.W. Tozer, Pg. 24)
God has always existed! He did not come into existence nor was He created when Mary gave birth to our Savior in the New Testament. Mary was just a vessel whom God used to accomplish His plan for salvation by sending His Son, Jesus into the world. He lived a sinless life when He was on this earth. He went to the cross on our behalf, He was crucified, He died for all the sins of humanity, and He rose on the third day so that whoever believes in Him will have eternal life. He is the propitiation for our sins.
John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” In John 1:14, the Bible says, “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” When we go back to the Old Testament, Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
God is uncreated! He always was, He is, and He will always be. In Warren Wiersbe’s commentary on Colossians (Be Complete), he writes, “Jesus Christ is not a created being; He is eternal God.” Since Christ created all things, He Himself is uncreated. (Pg. 60)
The Great God Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, said, “This is My name throughout all generations, My memorial forever: I AM THAT I AM. I never was created; I was not made, I AM. I made you for My love, I made you to worship, honor and glorify Me. (The Attributes of GOD, Volume 2 by A.W. Tozer, Pg. 31)
We should continue to read our Bibles from beginning to end so we can have a biblical understanding of Who God is. Reading only parts of the Bible will result in a partial understanding of Who God is.
Hopefully, you found this attribute encouraging and it has given you more insight into God’s Self-Existence. This attribute can also help you in defending your faith for Christ. In this day and age that we are living in, there are many people who have a misguided view of Who God is. As you read and study God’s Word more, it will deepen your faith in Him while giving you a biblical understanding of Who He is which will help you to defend your faith.
Exodus 3:14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’
“I WILL ALWAYS BE WHO I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN” or “I WILL FOREVER BE WHO I AM NOW.” God never changes. -Charles F. Stanley Life Principles Bible
